A spiky ball is one piece of equipment which I always have in my dance and circus bag. Having gone through many spiky balls over the years I consider myself a bit of a spiky ball connoisseur. You definitely don't need to spend AU $35 at a sports store to get a good one. The following is a review of my top 5 favorites and where to get them.

These balls are 10cm in diameter are made from a hard rubber compound so they're fairly strong but have the tiniest bit of give.
These are just like the spiky balls they sell at the big brand sports stores but cheaper. Personally I find longer spikes more effective, however, if you're after a more gentle massage then these are for you. |
This ball is 8cm wide and quite firm. The spikes are more pointy and less rounded then some balls which I find makes it better for getting into your muscles.
These are the perfect size for getting into the side of your hip. By the time you pay for shipping, it works out at about AU $20 which is still cheaper than buying one of your big sports brands. |
This is a very clever 4 ball pack combo pack of hard and soft, 6cm and 9cm balls. This is great for if you have different needs for massaging out different muscles.
All the balls have nice long spikes and the harder ones have a tiny bit of give. Having a hard/ sort ball back like this is a really good idea and makes it a pretty good deal - still only about AU $25 after shipping for 4 balls. |
These balls are quite hard and spiky which is what I personally prefer. This set also comes with a lacrosse ball, handy carry bag so you're less likely to loose them and even a free e-book detailing exercises you can do with them. Having everything in a pack like this makes this work out to be a very good deal.

This set is my favorite. It comes with a peanut (they can be up to $30 alone), plus a lacrosse ball and a handy carry bag.
The spiky ball is 8cm wide, firm and with slightly rounded spikes which makes it the perfect combination of really getting into your muscles without too much pain. still get into your muscles without hurting. The most expensive set but in my opinion this is the best deal considering what you get. |

I've been dancing since I was little. I've danced with Melbourne Dance Theatre, Look Left Dance Circus Theatre and Lyrebird Dance Theatre as well as and freelancing around Melbourne as a dancer and circus performer. This blog contains some of the lessons I've learned on my journey and some of the things I wish someone had told me earlier!
